Despite / Despite the fact that

Объясняем разницу между Despite и Despite the fact that, а также учимся применять их в IELTS Writing и Speaking.

 

 

Базовые правила

Despite и In spite of означают одно и тоже – “несмотря на”.

 

Despite – это предлог, а In spite of – это prepositional phrase (фраза, выполняющая функцию предлога).

 

Так как это по сути предлоги, после них мы можем использовать лишь существительные (реже – местоимения или герундии), потому что существительное отвечает на вопрос “кто? что?”.

 

Если же мы имеем дело с полной грамматической основой (подлежащее + сказуемое), то Despite использовать нельзя. К нему нужно добавить фразу “the fact that”. То же правило работает и для In spite of.

Начните с “Despite”, объединив два предложения выше.

Результат:
Despite the fact that working women were in majority (55%) in the UK in 2003, their percentage decreased to 48% in 2009.

Millions of people around the globe face the shortage of food supply.
Agricultural industry has been constantly improving.

Начните с “Millions of people”, объединив два предложения выше.

Результат:
Millions of people around the globe face the shortage of food supply despite the fact that agricultural industry has been constantly improving.

Подойдет для IELTS Writing Task 2

The opposing views.
I believe that the benefits of owning a house are clear.

Начните с “Despite”, объединив два предложения выше.

Результат:
Despite the opposing views, I believe that the benefits of owning a house are clear.

 

Ситуация 4

Подойдет для IELTS Writing Task 1

Bananas remained the least consumed fruit.
Their percentage increased.

Начните с “Bananas”, объединив два предложения выше.

Результат:
Bananas remained the least consumed fruit despite the fact that their percentage increased.

Начните с “Public speaking”, объединив два предложения выше.

Результат:
Public speaking may be challenging for many people despite being a crucial skill nowadays.

Growing average living standards on the planet.
Many countries still experience economic hardships.

Начните с “Despite”, объединив два предложения выше.

Результат:
Despite growing average living standards on the planet, many countries still experience economic hardships.
